Vehicle Fitness Certificate Zimbabwe

What VID checks, fees and how to prepare your vehicle

What is a Fitness Certificate?

A fitness certificate (also called a roadworthiness certificate) confirms that your vehicle meets minimum safety standards for use on Zimbabwe's roads. It is issued by the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) after your vehicle passes a fitness test.

Important: Private vehicles do not require routine annual fitness certificates. VID fitness tests for private cars are required at registration/transfer, after accidents, or when defects are suspected. Annual fitness certificates are mandatory for public service vehicles and commercial vehicles.

You need a valid fitness certificate for:

  • Vehicle registration and transfer of ownership
  • Vehicle insurance claims
  • Annual renewal — public service vehicles and commercial vehicles only
  • After an accident or when a vehicle defect is suspected by traffic authorities
